“Because they’re dumb” is a common justification vegan activists hear when people are asked why they eat animals. In Earthling Ed’s e-book he responds to this “reason” with these four questions…
- “Does intelligence define worth of life?
- Is your life worth more than someone who has learning difficulties?
- If intelligence equals dominance does that mean that someone with a higher IQ can do what they want to someone with a lower IQ?
- A pig has been shown to be more intelligent than a dog, does this fact mean that you will stop eating pigs and start eating dogs instead?”
who’s dumb
All great questions, right? Makes ya think. He goes on to point out that we do the least intelligent thing of any species because we consume without considering the impact of our actions. “We are destroying the rainforests and the ocean at a frightening rate, and we are polluting so much that our world is literally being destroyed right in front of us and yet so little is being done to safeguard the future of even our own species.”
the pig farmer
John Robbins (Baskin-Robbins ice cream heir who rejected the family fortune) book, Diet For A New America, was a pivotal read for me back in 2003 when I went vegan. It opened my eyes to the impact eating animals and their secretions has on us, the environment, and the animals. One of his experiences he recalls in his book, that has stuck with me all these years, is when he went on an undercover visit to a pig farm. It’s a powerful story with an amazing outcome, and a short read, definitely worth checking out here.
The story not only shows the great intelligence and worth of pigs, but it also shows the incredible benefits (financially and personal/spiritual well-being) farmers can experience when they make the choice to transition away from exploiting animals.
another reason to ditch eating animals
Plus, eating animals may be responsible for the problem with super bugs/antibiotic resistance/MRSA/E.Coli/Salmonella. All great reasons to support organizations who are helping farmers/ranchers make the transition. See below…
