A couple of years ago I toured a coffee plantation in Bali where they sit you down at a table half way through the tour. Included with the price of the tour, you are given about 12 samples of different coffees and teas. For an additional cost, you can try the “exclusive” Kopi Luwak coffee.
NOT ONLY IS IT GROSS… IT’S CRUEL TOO
In case you are wondering what Kopi Luwak is, it’s coffee made from beans that have been consumed by civets and collected after they $hit them out. That’s right, it’s animal $hit coffee. It sells anywhere between US $100 -$500+ per pound.
Whoever thought to capitalize on this must be laughing all the way to the bank, and then laughing some more. I mean, seriously, how does coffee that comes out of a butthole become a desirable exclusive product that people actually want to pour down their throats?

In the video she describes the Kopi Luwak tourism industry and the inherent cruelty that goes along with it. I can confirm what she points out. These poor nocturnal animals are in small cages, during broad daylight, used as spectacles for loud gawking tourists.
Nina points out a great way to tackle this issue is to reach out to the companies that carry this product and encourage them to stop supporting this industry.
