Is the scarcity mindset prevalent in the vegan community? Below is an explanation of what scarcity mindset is for those of you who are not familiar with what it is and how it relates to the vegan community.
DESCRIPTION
In a nutshell, a scarcity mindset is a belief that there will never be enough resources, be it, money, support, emotions, etc.
So, how does this fit in with the vegan community?
Unfortunately, there are many organizations and individuals within the vegan community who operate with this mindset. They refuse to work together with other vegans and vegan orgs. They believe that there is a finite amount of money and supporters to go around.
Therefore, they choose not to cooperate with and support other vegans/vegan orgs. And can be quick to dole out harsh criticisms and judgements in efforts to tear them down.
DISAPPOINTING AND DETRIMENTAL ON MANY LEVELS
This is disappointing for the simple fact that a “house divided against itself, cannot stand“. To further quote Lincoln, “If slavery is not wrong, nothing is wrong”. Are you starting to see where I’m going with this?
If vegan groups & organizations would get over their scarcity mindset and start to work together then we will be unstoppable at achieving our goal of animal liberation. It’s time vegans work together to free the slaves of today. The ones without a voice.
RECOGNIZING ABUNDANCE ATTRIBUTES
Having an abundance mindset will help us achieve animal liberation. The above meme shows the difference between the scarcity mindset and the abundance mindset. To expound on it, vegan organizations and individuals need to…
- think big when it comes to the massive task of changing societies views on animal liberation
- come from a stance of plenty when it comes to available resources
- happily work with each other
- be willing to embrace change for the better
- cooperate with one another
- be open to learning from one another
- be proactive in achieving our goal
- be open to all the possibilities, and
- be grateful to each other for the efforts we all put in to liberating animals
HOW WE CHANGE FOR THE BETTER IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE OUR GOAL
In this Forbes article, Carolyn Centeno Milton asks the question,”How do we shift out of scarcity thinking into abundant thinking?”
She goes on to explain, “While scarcity focuses on what we don’t have, abundant thinking is an attitude and mindset that focuses on what we do have. It allows us to see possibility rather than limits and can shift our perspective.
It can help us lead more resilient and creative lives and help our teams function at their highest levels of productivity and collaboration.”
THREE TOOLS
She mentions three tools that will help with the shift from a scarcity to abundance mindset. They are…
GRATITUDE AND ENOUGH
Focus on, “the word enough: being enough, having enough, accomplishing enough.
Being grateful also triggers dopamine in your brain, which allows you to feel happier, healthier and have a more expansive mindset.
So, focus on what you do have and what you have accomplished. Writing this down in a journal can help you strengthen your neural pathways and more easily shift into this type of thinking.”
CULTIVATE FAITH
” When the world feels like it’s against you, it can be easy to lose faith in a better path. We each need tools to bring us out of that state and remind us that we have agency over our lives.”
Below are examples of tools that help cultivate faith…
“Finding things like meditation, going for a walk, treating yourself, being in nature, enjoying an inspiring story/book/film/conversation, doing something creative, even finding a scent that triggers a good memory. Write down a list of things that make you feel inspired about the possibilities in life. This week anytime you begin to lose faith – take action.”
CELEBRATE THE SUCCESS OF OTHERS
Last, but certainly not least, “When we are in a scarcity-based mindset we see competitors, friends, and partners who have something we want as a threat because we believe that if they have or are that thing we can’t have it and won’t be able to be it.
This belief is based on the idea that there isn’t enough to go around.
If we are in an abundant mindset we are okay with celebrating others and know that there is more than enough to go around. If others succeed they are paving a way for you to succeed as well.
This week celebrate others that succeed. Be inspired by them and recognize what the comparison is telling you about the feeling you would like to cultivate in your life.”(1)
IN SUMMARY
Hopefully you can see the need for all of us to operate from an abundance mindset in order to achieve animal liberation. The question is, which mindset are you operating from?
