VEGAN COMMUNICATION: THE PROBLEM

In this video, Dr. Melanie Joy, discusses why she believes that the issue of vegan communication is the most important topic for our movement to be engaging with.

how to be a powerful voice for the animals

“How we communicate can impact our movement in one of two ways. Our communication can help create a resilient movement- which is a healthy, strong movement that’s a powerful force for the animals. Or it can feed the problem of a movement that’s cannibalizing itself.

A movement is resilient when its proponents relate to each other in a way that increases their sense of security and connection. Our communication can be healthy or toxic. We violate our integrity whenever we communicate in a way that doesn’t reflect compassion and justice (that’s not respectful).”

toxic communication = animal deaths

If 15% of an organizations members engage in toxic communication, it can cause 200,000+ animals to be killed, in an organization of 100 people. “Every toxic communication is like shooting a hole in the bottom of the animals’ lifeboat.”

“When deciding whether to communicate, ask yourself: Is it true? And is it kind? If the answer is no, then it’s probably best not to communicate. Be extremely skeptical of anyone who argues that it’s ever appropriate to communicate without compassion and respect.”
