Is horse racing really a “sport”? Is it “sport” to force performance on someone? A performance that is associated with a high death rate no less. Should horse racing be considered an antiquated “sport” that should become a thing of the past?
NOT SPORTY CAUSING THE DEATH OF INNOCENTS
“Racetracks in the United States have a particular problem with horses dying. Nearly 10 horses a week on average died at American racetracks in 2018, according to the Jockey Club’s Equine Injury Database. That figure is anywhere from two and a half to five times greater than the fatality rate in Europe and Asia, where rules against performance-enhancing drugs are enforced more stringently. Even so, what transpired at Santa Anita, where a horse was put down more than once a week, on average, stands out.” (1)
As of December 29th… a recording of 43 racehorses have died at Santa Anita during 2019. (2)
“On the central matter of ‘casualties’ and ‘catastrophic breakdowns,’ while drugs, pre-existing injuries, track conditions, etc. are all certainly relevant, the simple truth is that the maiming and destruction of racehorses is inherent to the industry. Death at the track is, always has been, and always will be an inevitable part of racing.” (3)
Who agrees that it’s time to end this?
Edit: Since this posting was first published a month ago, 3 more deaths have been added to the growing list. And we’re still only in the first month of the year. https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2020-01-19/santa-anita-horse-deaths
